Swindon bus company Thamesdown Transport launches a new Young Persons’ TravelPass from Thursday 1 August.
This will replace the current Student TravelPass, widening the eligibility to everyone under 20 years old and so saving them up to a third on standard adult fares.
With 6.4% of 18 to 24 year olds in Swindon claiming jobseekers allowance, the town is above the national average for youth unemployment and so access to affordable travel is a key priority in helping young people find and keep jobs, as well as accessing education.
Thanks to the ever-rising cost of buying and running a car and the average cost of car insurance for an 18 year old hitting £4,000*, private transport is often a luxury out of reach of Swindon’s young people.
The Young Persons’ TravelPass gives unlimited travel on all Thamesdown and Stagecoach buses within the Swindon urban area for just £35 for four weeks.
For young people travelling outside the Swindon urban area, for example to and from Purton, Royal Wootton Bassett, Cricklade, Bishopstone and Chiseldon, the Young Persons’ TravelPass Plus is available at £40 for four weeks.
Paul Jenkins, managing director at Thamesdown Transport, said: “Making travelling easy, accessible and affordable for young people is not only a national priority in helping to get the economy moving, but also one that we recognize here in Swindon as of great importance for the town and for building the futures of our young people.
“We appreciate that it is not only students who can benefit from cheaper travel, but also all young people who may be looking for work, as well as those with jobs and needing to keep their commuting costs down.
“The Young Person’s TravelPass has been designed to make travel around Swindon easier for everyone under 20.”
Young people can apply for their Young Persons’ TravelPass at the Travel Shop in Fleming Way, where they will need to bring a passport-size photo and photographic proof of age. The TravelPass can be topped up with additional weeks’ travel at the Travel Shop.
Young people who currently hold a Student TravelPass will not need to change their cards.
