“The music industry is going through a difficult time,” points out Discovery Records’ Commercial Director, Martin Cobb, “so I thought we should do something positive, something that gives music lovers some added value when they come to our site. That’s why our Facts Of The Day microsite is completely free.”
Discovery’s Facts Of The Day is a music lover’s portal to a host of fascinating day-by-day facts and insights about his or her favourite artists. Every day of the year is covered with several facts per day.
The West County’s most successful blues/rock singer-songwriter Jon Amor, says, “Any music lover, like me, will find Discovery's new Facts Of The Day site fascinating. Facts, figures and trivia about great blues, jazz and rock artists are available at your fingertips, just a mouse-click away.”
Facts Of The Day was created for online distributor Discovery Records by the internet and music resource team at the Devizes-based Rocksource Archive.
• What did Elvis Presley really want when his parents gave him his first guitar?
• When was the young Ray Charles first admitted to blind school?
• When did In The Mood by Glenn Miller reach No1 in the USA?
These facts and many more are included in Discovery Records’ Facts Of The Day, but there’s an added bonus. Each day’s worth of facts includes internet links to sites where you can learn even more about the artists, watch them perform on YouTube, or learn about the venues they played in, the songs they sang and the labels they recorded for.
You can even exclude the facts that don’t interest you and search on a month-by-month basis for facts relating only to the artists of your choice.
For over 30 years, Discovery Records has been supplying music retailers with specialist titles of all styles, on labels from the UK, most European countries, and The USA. They were based in Pewsey until 2001, and prior to that, in Woodborough. Five years ago they set up a website offering direct sales to the public.
“Even then” says Bill Trythall, Product Manager at Discovery, “it was becoming obvious that high street record shops were beginning to decline in number, and that we had to think about becoming an online retailer in order to reach certain areas of the music-buying public. But naturally, we want to see record shops survive – we are still primarily a supplier to retailers, and we do what we can to support them”.
