AFTER a long and tiring season it’s been nice to have a few weeks off and relax.
I got to spend a week in Tunisia and it was really good to have a break, get some sun and unwind. I’ve been waiting for a break like this for quite a while. I turned my phone off the whole week and mentally that was the best thing I could have done.
Coming back now I’ve got to face reality and get back into training but it’s something I’m really excited about. While you lie on a sunbed, as much as you do try to switch off mentally, you do have a lot of time to reflect on how the season’s gone and what you’re going to achieve next season.
It’s a really good time to get your head around it and I think now I’m ready to get back in things. It’s a bit daunting having not swum for a few weeks but it’s the same for everyone at the start of the season.
From experience, I think having three to four weeks off does no harm and for me, after this year, it was the best thing I could have done. I read a book while on holiday about looking after your brain. It says you need to repair brain cells in your head – it sounds silly when I say it like that but it made sense. Having rest time is so important.
I’m looking forward to getting back into everything. I’ve got really good plans for the season.
We have got a big issue with the pool in Bath starting reconstruction work. They haven’t started, as expected. They said they’d start five weeks ago and they haven’t but we’ve done the best we can to sort pool time out elsewhere.
Maybe the change of bouncing between pools might keep me fresh and motivated because it does get boring staring at the same pool floor – the same tiles every day. It’ll be nice to change it up and share the pool with other squad members.
The traveling might be a bit tricky if I’ve got university work to finish off. I’m going to have to stick to my diary but still have some time to completely rest to keep me fresh and mentally maintained for the year. It’s going to be a long year.
I’m still trying to get past the hurdle of a driving test, too. I’m trying to find the right driving instructor. I’ve had a few lessons and they’ve gone quite well but I didn’t have a great one the last time before I went on holiday and my instructor started shouting at me.
I’ve had to change my instructor after that. I’ve yet to find my dream driving instructor but I have been told I am close to passing. Then I’ll have to look at finding some wheels.
