KIERAN Hill won Sunday’s Highworth Triathlon in a time of 54:18.1, beating runner-up Phil Kruse by a little over six seconds.
The 20-year-old Loughborough University student took a clear lead after the swim and extended that advantage to more than a minute following the bike stage.
However, Kruse exhibited grit and experience to claw back Hill’s lead, only to fall agonisingly short at the finish. Andrew Martin came home third in 59:16.6, with Matt Boon a further four seconds behind in fourth.
In the women’s event, Claire Vallance recorded a handsome victory in 1:05:17.4. Ffion Davies took a 25-second lead in the swim before Vallance picked up the pace on the bike to take the lead and held top spot through to the finish. Davies was second in 1:05:46.5, with Charlie Iles third in 1:08:09.8.
Around half the field of 200 at the Rec were taking part in their inaugural triathlon.
Race organiser Ciaran Alstowe said: “I would to thank all the marshals, Wiltshire Police force and our sponsors – Dan Stallard at Executive Financial Planning and Excalibur.”
Alstowe will be donating a portion of the funds raised by the event to Wiltshire Air Ambulance in memory of his late mother and Alzheimer’s UK.
