Falling over, whether at home or outside, can have serious consequences for older people or people who have disabilities.
There’s the risk that the person who falls will break a bone or a sustain a serious soft tissue injury, which might take a long time to heal and could result in a stay in hospital. But falling or fear of falling can also make people lose their confidence in doing normal day to day things, which can, of course, spoil the quality of their lives, and cause worry and concern to their families.
Perhaps surprisingly, one of the causes of falls is foot problems, and in particular uncut or poorly cut toenails.
Which is why SEQOL, the social enterprise that provides adult social care and community health services for us in Swindon, has developed its Foot Care Service.
Gary Enticott, one of the professionally trained SEQOL footcare assistants who helped develop the service, says people who treat themselves to some footcare often say they wish they’d done so years ago.
“Anyone who, say, suffers from poor eyesight, or from arthritis, or simply finds it difficult to bend down these days, is likely to find cutting their own toenails difficult or impossible,” says Gary.
“So we’ve developed a very flexible service where we can visit people in their own homes, or they can come to one of our footcare sessions around the borough.
We also offer discounts for more than one client in one home, so that quite often a client will ask a few friends or neighbours around to have their feet done at the same time, and share the savings between them. I love the idea of these nail parties – and for a few extra pounds we can also offer a handcare session at the same time, so our clients feel really pampered as well as more comfortable!”
Irene Williams, 94, of Pinehurst, has been using the SEQOL footcare service since it began. She uses the home service with her friend and neighbour Dorothy Nixon, who is 91.
“We’re still both very independent and don’t give in to many things, but at our age cutting your own toenails does get difficult, and so we’ve given in to that,” says Mrs Williams.
“We really enjoy it. We often have Gary, and we’ve given up trying to count all his tattoes, but he’s so pleasant, and good company. They’re all so nice and friendly, and always do exactly what we want, and the foot massage is lovely.”
