Roger Gower of North Swindon has been Chairman of the Swindon-Salzgitter Twinning Association since November, and had the pleasure of organising the German visitors’ trip to Swindon in June.
“I’ve been involved with the Twinning Association in Swindon for about a year, having had involvement with twinning previously in Yeovil. But it was quite a shock to be elected Chairman, and I’ve been on a very steep learning curve since November,” said Roger.
During the June visit the German guests enjoyed trips to Oxford, Lacock, and the Houses of Parliament, under the generous sponsorship of MP for North Swindon Justin Tomlinson.
“The aim of twinning is to promote cultural appreciation and political and economic understanding between civic communities. It is only through speaking to people from different backgrounds that you begin to realise their problems are precisely our own, and that ordinary folk are very much the same,” said Roger.
The Twinning Association is grant-funded, as well as through subscriptions and fund-raising, and is currently looking for new members to join.
“Membership is particularly suited to people who relate to the aims and objectives of twinning, who are curious about other cultures, are happy to bang the drum for Swindon, and who enjoy and are able to host visitors in their home. Language needn’t be a barrier because the Germans all speak very good English.
“We would also like to remind schools and local businesses that we may be able to facilitate educational exchanges or commercial opportunities through the association.”
