The Swindon Parents and Carers Advisory Group are once more holding an event designed to provide parents and carers of special needs and disabled children and young people in Swindon with information about services available to them and support for those they care for.
The event, “Voices and Choices”, to be held in the newly refurbished Inspiration Suite at the DeVere Village Hotel in West Swindon on 31 March between 10:30am and 7:00pm, this year takes on a different form from the previous two years.
Doug Morris Chair of the Group said “We have run successful conference style events over the last two years and felt it was time to try something different. This year we are inviting parents and carers to drop in whenever they like throughout the day and browse around the exhibitors at their own leisure. Because there are no formal presentations, members of the Group will be available to chat with visitors and discuss the issues they face on a daily basis. We hope that the discussions will help us set our agenda for the coming year and maybe beyond. Our theme “Voices and Choices” is supported by our “Carers Journey” road map which identifies key milestones for parents and carers, including diagnosis, support from health, education, social care, transition to adult services and even onto life after caring. The intention is to ensure that we encompass everything parents and carers are expected to deal with as a matter of course.”
Doug continued “This year the Group have managed to build on the success of previous years and have attracted a larger number of diverse exhibitors which will provide a wider range of interest to the visitors. As the venue is fully accessible, parents and carers should feel free to bring their children, young people and families along too. To attract more visitors we have intentionally extended the event into the evening, this will open up the opportunity for parents and carers who can’t come during the day because of demands from work or caring responsibilities to attend.”
The event is open not only to parents and carers, but service professionals also. The group feels that it is important to meet those that deliver services, have a more informal conversation with them and work in partnership to support the improvement and development of services in the Borough.
