Swindon’s Wessex Male Choir helped raise over £1,300 for Cancer Research UK at its recent charity concert in Chippenham, which featured special guests the Jubilate Ladies Choir from Middlesex.
The concert took place in early October at St Andrew’s Church in Chippenham and Wessex Male Choir’s repertoire included All By Myself’ (as sung by Only Men Aloud on the BBC’s Last Choir Standing), an upbeat barbershop item ‘Down by the Riverside' and a selection from the musical Oliver!
Musical director, Robert Elliott said, "The concert was a great success, not only did it raise funds for such an important cause but we also had a lively audience of nearly 200 people, including The Lady Mayor of Chippenham, and the venue had beautiful acoustics where it was a joy to perform.
"The choir has a history of supporting charities and it was great to work with Cancer Research UK to put on this event."
This concert was organised by Cancer Research UK supporter, Natalie Waters, who said, “It was a fantastic evening and we are very grateful to Wessex Male Choir and Jubilate. This type of fundraising event is vital to fund the work done by Cancer Research UK and wouldn’t have been possible without the support of these choirs, and all the volunteers who made it happen. Cancer Research UK has over 40,000 volunteers working to support the charity – they really are the lifeblood of what we do."
The money raised will help to buy equipment for scientists carrying out essential research or to fund clinical trials. Research in Swindon currently includes 32 clinical trials at the Great Western Hospital.
Wessex Male Choir rehearses at the Church of Christ the Servant, Abbey Meads Village Centre, Swindon on Tuesday evenings between 7.30 and 9.30pm.
