1244 (West Swindon) Detached Flight are holding a recruitment evening on Friday 4 January, 7.30pm, in the Sunshine Room, Westlea Primary School and welcome boys and girls of 13 and over to meet cadets and staff and learn about ATC activities through videos, displays and one-to-one discussions.
Parents, relatives and friends are all welcome and light refreshments will be available. Cadets will start the evening with a short drill display.
Over the past year cadets have taken part in a range of activities: glider training at Hullavington near Chippenham; flying the RAF’s basic trainer at RAF Boscombe Down; helping to organise the air show at Kemble in June as well as attending a summer camp at RAF Brize Norton.
Cadets have also represented the squadron or wing in hockey, netball, football, swimming, athletics and cross country. Long distance trips have involved map reading on Dartmoor and a week in the Lake District for adventure training like kayaking, canoeing, mountain walking and climbing.
Creative skills are also catered for and last year the detachment achieved third place against 25 other squadrons in a wing training day. Cadets produced models, and photographic displays, and special mention has to be given to Cdt Porter for his detachment website: www.1244df.org.uk
Detachment commander Helene Woodhams says the ATC caters for all interests. “Whether you plan to join the Royal Air Force or want to pursue an interest, meet new friends or need to gain confidence in doing something new, come along and find out more.”
In January the detachment will parade on Monday and Friday evenings at Westlea School. Because of the ATC popularity after previous notices in Swindon Link, Helene is making an appeal for more adults to volunteer their skills to work with the cadets. She said, “we’d like to meet more adults with an interest in aviation adventure training who could assist on a Friday evening to help achieve higher standards. Come along to the open evening to find out more about us.”
