One of the biggest selling groups of all time, The Drifters, has offered Swindon’s Westlea Primary School a once in a lifetime opportunity to perform with them live on stage!
Now in their 59th year, The Drifters have seen massive chart success on both sides of the Atlantic and across the world, with over 114 million album sales and 214 million singles sales and a vast catalogue of hits, many of which are on the album including Under The Boardwalk, Like Sister and Brother, Saturday Night At The Movies, Save The Last Dance For Me and Kissin in The Back Row.
On a visit to Westlea on 23 February Michael Williams said: “We are very much looking forward to working with the children. We work closely with schools as part of PMG’s musical education programme that we are very proud to be part of. As part of our current UK tour we are currently visiting the schools across the country to rehearse songs; we have been completely overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and excitement of the children – it is a very special project to be involved in.”
Managing Director of PMG, Kathy Mashadi said: “In a time where reality television, particularly programmes such as X Factor, often gives children a false impression of life in performance, this programme aims to give children a more accurate overview of what happens in the music industry – from what is involved in preparing for a performance through to the actual show itself, giving them a real opportunity to perform as part of a world class production. It is an experience they never forget.”
Year 5 Westlea pupil Jessica Lawrence said: "We’re really happy to be singing with The Drifters. When I told my dad that Michael was coming to school, he was amazed and said The Drifters is his favourite act. Michael was really nice with us. We can’t wait to get on stage with him."
Westlea headteacher Suzanne Seaton added: "The Drifters are fantastic; their songs are so memorable. I enjoyed them a lot when I was younger and they’re still just as good. My husband is really looking forward to being at the Wyvern to see the children. It’s a wonderful experience for them to perform on stage with a big group with a live band."
The Drifters, accompanied by Westlea Primary School, will perform at the Wyvern Theatre on Friday 27 April. Book tickets today at wyverntheatre.org.uk or by calling the Ticket Office on 01793 524 481.
