Wiltshire Wildlife Trust launched a new interactive DVD promoting the benefits of real nappies at the West Wiltshire Show in Trowbridge in July.
The DVD is now available from health visitor clinics, children’s centres and GP surgeries across Wiltshire. Families will also be able to access the DVD via the Trust’s website www.wiltshirewildlife.org.
“The DVD will show new mums and dads how easy it is to use real nappies,” says Gary Lamont, Co-ordinator of the Trust’s Real Nappy Network, which is funded by Wiltshire Council and Swindon Borough Council. “It will show them the wide range of choices available and the benefits these can have in terms of saving money and helping protect the environment.
“The Trust has been promoting real nappies in the county for a number of years as part of its sustainable living work. What we have found through talking to hundreds of new parents is that many are not fully aware of all the nappy options that are available to them.
“Parents may reluctantly opt for disposables because these are the ones that are heavily promoted and the ones that appear to be more immediately accessible. Some may even start to use disposables while still searching for a better option, but find that once in a routine it’s hard to change.
The DVD will provide all the information to help parents overcome these barriers. It will also have step-by-step instructions and tips on how to wash and care for the nappies in an economic and environmentally sensitive way, and details of where to buy them.
And if parents are still not entirely sure, they can make use of the Trust’s nappy loan kits so that they can try a range of styles before they buy.
Mum of 6-month-old twins, Lynda Ormandy from Calne, who was filmed for the DVD, agrees. “I think the main barrier to new parents not using real nappies is that there are so many different types available and all this information can be really overwhelming, especially if you’re trying to make a decision in the hectic days of late pregnancy,” she says.
”Through the Real Nappy Network I was visited by Gary Lamont who showed me, in my own home, a range of styles – he was also able to advise me on the type he thought was best, given that I had twins.
“With the trial pack we were able to try out the different types and discovered how easy they are to use – we even found that we could put the nappies in with the rest of our washing.”
Mum of two Vanessa Emanuel, who runs the Swindon Real Nappy Network and who took part in the film, says:
“The DVD will help dispel the myths that real nappies involve soaking, boiling and pins. It will also show that they are so simple to use that even a child can handle them.
“Not being aware of just how easy they are to use is probably the main obstacle preventing families from going down this route. I have used real nappies on both my sons, and when my youngest Alexander, now 3, was still a baby, my eldest James, now 5, would happily help me when changing nappies.”
In fact, James has a starring role in the film and is seen changing a baby doll’s real nappy – he proudly says: “I know how to use them!”
