Katie Warren from Wrag Barn is the new Wiltshire Ladies’ County Golf Champion. 16-year-old Katie, who plays off a handicap of 4, played almost flawless golf in the final round of the Championship at Cumberwell Park on 6 May to beat last year’s champion, Sarah Gee from West Wilts.
The Championship runs over three days with two qualifying rounds on Friday and the knock-out stages on Saturday and Sunday. Although the weather improved and the rain held off for the whole weekend, the course was very wet and the conditions quite difficult. In spite of this, there were some very good performances and the standard of golf played by the two finalists was exceptionally high.
Afterwards, Katie said, “I just set out to enjoy myself and I did. I can’t believe that I have actually won it! I am really pleased for my Mum (Jo) who caddied for me for all three days.” Katie’s Dad, Gary, and her younger brother, Ashley, were also there to see her win.
County Captain, Anne Martin, was delighted with the youngsters’ performance. She said, “I was so proud to see them play such good golf and to conduct themselves so well under pressure. They are a credit to Wiltshire.”
Other successes during the Championship included Carol Main from Chippenham who won the 2nd Flight for the Gillian Wood Trophy and Karen Gosling who won the Sybil Parsons Plate for the best two scratch scores by a player over 40 on the qualifying day. The Team Shield for the best three scratch scores from a single club was won by Wrag Barn.
