Seren Rees, 13, from North Swindon is a young carer for her mum who has nerve damage in her stomach and has not been well for 12 years.
Caring for her includes responsibilities such as sorting out her medication, often calling her an ambulance, household jobs and looking after three younger siblings who are also young carers.
Seren, who attends Isambard Community School, has been helped by Swindon Young Carers for some years.
Now she’s aiming to raise money for the charity which supports carers aged between 5 and 18 years.
They offer one-to-one sessions, after-school activities and trips out to give the young people the chance to do things that others, who don’t have caring responsibilities, take for granted.
Seren said: “Trips are expensive so I am raising money as a way of saying thank you. I have put collection boxes in shops and I’ve e-mailed local schools asking for their support.
“My mum is amazingly talented at making cards, so if you are interested in buying any, look at her Facebook page: Dotty Freddy Handcrafted Cards.”
Seren would welcome help from individuals willing to organise community events to fundraise for Swindon Young Carers and also businesses able to organise dress down days at work, cake sales, or even just help her raise awareness of how young carers help other members of their families.
