With the imminent closure of the long established climbing wall and sports hall at Link Centre in West Swindon to make way for a 1,200 square metre trampoline centre , the town will see a brand new dedicated climbing centre called Rockstar opening later in the summer in the Stratton area.
The aim of this ambitious project is to both provide a new state-of-the-art facility for an already active and growing climbing community in Swindon, but also aims to inspire families, schools, colleges and individuals of all ages and abilities to discover the sport that is sweeping the UK.
Rockstar’s owner, Mike Aston, commented: “Climbing is one of the few sports that develops a healthy mind as well as a healthy body. It is an empowering activity which genuinely changes people’s lives for the better.
“By making our facility as inclusive as possible, our ambition is to encourage everyone to discover how climbing can help them become fitter and stronger.”
The Rockstar Climbing Centre, which will occupy 7,700 square foot, will have a world-class bouldering area (low-level climbing performed without the use of ropes over thick safety matting), roped routes up to 10 metres in height, and slacklining which is a comparatively new craze of balancing and walking at low-level on dynamic webbing fixed between two points. In addition to these activities Rockstar Climbing will also have a dedicated climbing area where families with children as young as four can spend time and have fun.
There is also an emphasis within the centre to expand the educational side of climbing and Rockstar aims to help and support more schools in bringing climbing to their curriculum. The centre also has plans to offer national indoor climbing and bouldering award schemes (NICAS and NIBAS) which are proving popular with schools and parents alike.
Rockstar’s Centre Manager, Brian Hall, explained: “Climbing helps teach children valuable life skills such as perseverance, the value of goal setting, and builds social interaction skills. It also boosts confidence, creativity and problem solving skills as well as improving hand/eye co-ordination. The best bit is that kids get to develop these skills whilst having fun.”
Over and above all the climbing activities, Rockstar will also cater for parties and corporate team building events plus, with a café on-site too, it will be ‘the’ place to socialise and catch up with friends even if you’re not a climber.
As part of Rockstar’s bid to bring climbing and all its benefits to Swindon and the surrounding towns they will be offering taster sessions, courses and groups, climbing clubs and coaching. For those who relish a challenge there will also be regular competitions.
