The Swindon Trauma Group will be holding a Gulf War Syndrome Workshop on Friday 5 June from 12.45pm to 5pm at Lydiard Park Conference Centre.
Refreshments will be available on arrival with tea, coffee and scones with jam and cream mid-afternoon. The cost is £12.50 per person.
The Swindon Trauma Group (STG) has been going a number of years now with a lot of support locally and nationally. Symptoms of Post Trauma Stress (PTS) can develop when a person is subjected to an event considered outside the realms of human experience. If the symptoms’ persist for longer than say four weeks the person may well develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
In 2007, The New Scientist magazine stated the Government of the time should acknowledge that 6,000 British veterans of the 1990 to 1991 Gulf War were physically disabled due to their wartime service.
This was based on independent research carried out in the UK by a committee headed by Lord Lloyd of Manchester-plus research carried out by the Advisory Committee of the US Department of Veterans Affairs. Also in 2005 two soldiers and a RAF medic successfully won their war pensions tribunal to recognise Gulf War Syndrome with the support of Maria Rusling of the National Gulf Veterans and Family Association
The Gulf War Syndrome workshop will be looking at the causes of the debilitating condition and what treatment and support is available.
The next workshop after this to be held by Swindon Trauma Group will be on Friday 24 July at Lydiard Park Conference Centre about Post Traumatic Stress.
As far back as March 1994 the Nursing Times published articles on PTSD with the emphasis for support for nursing staff post trauma and allowing people involved in a disaster permission to mourn and not be under pressure to get over it.
This workshop will be looking at what treatment and support is available for the Invisible Injuries PTS/PTSD.
And on top of this the group will be holding their annual conference and evening do at Swindon’s Marriott Hotel on Friday October 2.
In the Draw at Basepoint, Rivermead, Swindon in April, STG raised £61.10 not as much as previous years but STG still would like to thank Lyn Chapman and her staff for their help on the day.
Also thanks to the sponsors-Swindon Basepoint, Swindon Marriott Hotel, Cineworld at Shaw Leisure Centre, Lydiard Park Conference Centre, and Tescos at Shaw Village Centre.
The group has also won the Green Coupon Centre at Waitrose and thank the company and the public for their support.
