In August, children can have a woodland tea arty, build a den, climb a tree, create and make and discover the hidden magic of nature at Richard Jefferies Museum in the Mulberry Arts summer programme.
Every Sunday in August at the Mulberry Arts Art Club, six to 11 year olds can learn about famous artists and be inspired to make their own film, art garden, den – or develop their own ideas – and earn themselves a nationally recognised Arts Award.
“The last art club made a giant amaryllis flower which stood in the garden,” said the museum’s education officer, Hilda Sheehan.
Mulberry Arts Magic Mondays – the title taken from the Richard Jefferies children’s book, Wood Magic – encourages children of all ages to build a den, hear and tell stories, make music, create art, play games or simply run free climbing trees and exploring the garden – which includes the Victorian writer’s original famous Mulberry tree and orchard.
“We want children to make a place for themselves here,” said Hilda.
Art Club and Magic Mondays, adventures in nature and art in the creative environment of the Victorian nature writer’s farmhouse and gardens, are funded by Arts Council, England.
Art Club is priced £5 for child per session and runs from 10.30am until midday. Magic Mondays are £5 per family per session (or £15 for all the sessions) and runs from 1pm to 3pm with free play until 5pm. Places can be booked via www.richardjefferies.org or paid on the door. On Magic Mondays the Mulberry Tearoom will be open for refreshments.
The Richard Jefferies Museum is next to Coate Water, just up the road from the Sun Inn on the Marlborough Road. Visitors arriving by car are advised to park at Coate Water and walk to the new entrance. Visitors who require an accessible parking space should contact the museum on 07768 917466 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Mulberry Arts programme also includes adult writers masterclasses, workshops and an autumn elders’ art project.
