Swindon Half Marathon mascot, Monty the monkey, has taken to the skies to urge runners to get in training for the 13.1 mile event.
Monty accompanied the Silver Stars parachute team, part of the Royal Logistic Corps, and the Royal British Legion parachute team.
Helped by tandem parachute skydive instructor Dean Hoskins, Monty was launched from 6,000 feet above Wanborough, where he was able to see the whole of the Half Marathon route.
But it’s not just the Half Marathon that Monty is urging runners to get ready for, but also the five mile multi-terrain course, a two mile fun run and a one kilometre wheelchair race.
Dean said: “Jumping with Monty was a bit more challenging than jumping with another person, particularly because there was his out of control long arms, big head and light weight to think about! I wanted to help out SEQOL Charity to do something to get more people signed up as the benefit that the fundraising will bring to Swindon is very important. I would urge everyone, whatever their running ability, to have a go.”
Monty was too exhilerated by the experience to make a coherent comment. To have published it would have given a new definition to gibberish.
The event is being organised this year by SEQOL Charity. Chairperson Michelle Howard said: “Monty the monkey has been meeting members of the running community in Swindon as well as the public at events and visiting local businesses.
“The Swindon Half Marathon is designed to be more than a running event and will be a day that all the community can take part in with lots of activities happening in the running village too.
“Each race has been designed to be open to everyone and so those looking for a challenge or a personal best can take part in the half marathon or the five mile multi-terrain, whilst all ages and abilities can test and enjoy themselves in the fun run or wheelchair race.”
The jump was kindly facilitated by Skydive London. For more information about skydiving in Swindon or to find out how to do the same skydive as Monty, visit www.skydivelondon.co.uk
