The Swindon branch of Hop Skip and Jump has launched a programme offering alternative education to children from across Swindon and Wiltshire based around an innovative package of therapeutic sessions for young people who are unable to attend a mainstream school setting for whatever reason.
Alternative education is designed to provide support for some of the most vulnerable children by providing access to education when they are otherwise unable to attend school. The children have a number of particularly complicated needs. Many have severe behavioural difficulties and a large number have special educational needs that require careful management. HSJ staff are specifically trained to provide support for the children at the centre in West Swindon, in an environment designed to help children learn how to understand and control their emotions.
Hollie Smart, supervisor at Hop, Skip and Jump, Swindon said: “Without our support these children would have nowhere to go and would fall through the cracks in the education system . Many have been excluded from their school because of their behaviour and complex needs. These outbursts have a variety of causes, from difficult home lives to more damaging cases of abuse and neglect. The areas we work in are some of the most deprived in Swindon, leading to a large number of cases necessitating support.”
HS&J provide a roll on, roll off access to provision that accommodates children from as little as a couple of hours a week, all the way up to full school days, 5 days a week. Each child who uses the alternative education service receives individually tailored support to ensure that they have everything they need to achieve their full potential. Some children will continue attending special schools whilst utilising the specialist support at the HS&J centre.
