Free family trails are among some of the activities available to visitors of STEAM – Museum of the Great Western Railway during half term.
The Swindon Borough Council-owned museum will be open throughout the school holidays offering plenty of fun and adventure for children of all ages.
Visitors can climb aboard famous locomotives, hop on board the train simulator to experience being a train driver, as well as sampling life as a signalman in the life-like interactive signal box.
The Kemble Drive museum is open between 10am and 5pm up until 1 November. Budding engineers can also take up a daily challenge courtesy of STEAM’s exclusive Engineer’s Box
The Engineer’s Box is suitable for children aged between eight and 11 and includes a kit to make a balloon-powered carriage as well as other activities. The cost of each box is £5 in addition to normal STEAM admission.
Young detectives can also have plenty of fun following clues on a mystery activity trail thanks to STEAM’s Detective Activity Box. The box, which costs £5 in addition to normal admission, comes complete with a secret message pen and magnifying glass.
For those aged between five and nine, the Work it Out! Trail will invite children to take up the challenge of working out the answers to some intriguing GWR questions as they follow the trail around the museum exploring the great engines and hands-on displays. The trail is free with standard admission.
Another free trail aimed at under-fives will also be running throughout the school holidays. The Track It Down trail is available every day and encourages children to get involved with STEAM’s interactive displays and hunt for objects, shapes and colours.
