Two days after England play Australia at Twickenham in this year’s Rugby World Cup, a world famous streaker will be in Swindon to launch a charity breast cancer appeal and bra exhibition at the Brunel Centre.
Nearly twenty three years ago, on 2 January 1982, Erika Roe stripped off to reveal her 40″ bosom and sprinted across the hallowed headquarters of rugby during an England versus Australia international.
Brunel Centre Swindon has teamed up with Against Breast Cancer (ABC), the charity that funds pioneering research into new treatments and tools for earlier diagnosis, and will be collecting used bras to raise money for the charity. The focal point for the centre’s Bra The Brunel campaign will be a month-long exhibition of actual bras that have been donated by a myriad of celebrities. This will include the famous fur bikini top worn by Swindon’s own Diana Dors at the Venice Film Festival in the 1950s.
Jane Stewart, marketing ,anager at The Brunel said: “We’re delighted that Erica has agreed to launch our Bra The Brunel campaign on Monday 5 October and are thrilled to have so many bras from famous people on display, including some from Swindon ladies in the public eye. We’re especially pleased to be able to display Diana Dors’ iconic fur bikini.”
The eye catching centre piece of the campaign is a giant bra on display in The Brunel Centre. Twelve members of Swindon Stitch ‘n Bitch knitting group spent four months busily crocheting 418 squares for the 6 metre long artwork. Project coordinator Tracey Major said: “I designed it in my head and then we assembled the squares into three large sections. Before we put it up I was having a bit of a panic that it would like I imagined it – would it look a bra, would it hang right? But now that it’s on display we’re all really pleased by how it looks.”
The Brunel is calling on the ladies of Swindon to take their unwanted bras to the special donation bins around the shopping centre. For those willing to make an extra donation The Brunel is asking for £1 coins to be taped into each cup. “An extra pound in each cup would be great!” said Jane.
Bra The Brunel will be launched on Monday 5 October 2015 at 11am by Erika Roe who will be assisted by members of Supermarine Rugby Club. The Bra Exhibition, and launch, will take place in The Brunel Arcade, adjacent to Sue Ryder and opposite That’s Entertainment.
Bras donation bins can be found at:
Marks & Spencer Lingerie Department (first floor)

There will also be a bra bin to be found in the foyer at The Wyvern Theatre.
