The massive bra that has been on display at Swindon’s Brunel Centre for the past six weeks has been bought by local businessman James Phipps.
Provided by Stitch and Bitch the huge crocheted bra, which measures more than 13 foot across, was part of the shopping centre’s ‘Bra the Brunel’ campaign in aid of charity Against Breast Cancer.
The campaign achieved national news coverage over the past month and has seen huge amounts of support.
Excalibur Communications CEO James Phipps bought the huge item of underwear for nearly six hundred pounds after seeing it advertised on eBay, and plans to display it at Excalibur’s glass fronted base of operations at Arclite House in Peatmoor.
He said “The campaign was gaining national coverage, so after all the hard work I felt it had to have a successful conclusion. Having seen the bra for sale at auction, I couldn’t let this campaign, that has done so much to raise awareness locally and nationally, fizzle out without the sale.
“We are looking at having the crocheted bra displayed in our side window of the building so everyone driving along Mead Way can enjoy it, just as they have in the Brunel Centre. Involving Excalibur in the community is something I’m truly passionate about.”
The campaign was launched at the start of October by famous rugby streaker Erika Roe and members of the Swindon Supermarine Ladies Rugby Club.
The focal point for the centre’s campaign was a month-long exhibition of bras worn by a myriad of famous names, including the famous fur bikini top worn by Swindon’s own Diana Dors at the Venice Film Festival in the 1950s.
Jane Stewart, Marketing Manager for The Brunel said: “We are absolutely delighted James and the Excalibur team bid £560 for the giant bra made by Tracey Major and her colleagues from Swindon Stitch and Bitch. We have been overwhelmed with how many customers got on board with our event in support of Against Breast Cancer, donating both their bras and cash. A big Brunel thank you to everyone.”
Against Breast Cancer funds pioneering research into new treatments and tools for earlier diagnosis breast cancer appeal.
