Musicians young and old will be gathering in Swindon in mid-November to celebrate a milestone anniversary when Swindon Young Musicians hold a series of events to mark half a century of helping young people to make music.
Organised by the Friends of SYM the weekend of 13 to 15 November, includes a cheese and wine social event and a chance for past members to dust off their instruments relive their SYM days in a scratch concert. The weekend also includes a chance to see the current generation of young musicians perform at the Wyvern Theatre in the annual Last Night of the Proms concert.
Helen James, who played cornet with SYM in the 70s and 80s and now helps run the Friends of SYM, said: “We have lots of past members and tutors coming along to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary. We would love to get as many people as possible along to the events to meet old friends and share memories.”
Fran Cowley, who helped establish SYM in 1965 and is currently president of the organisation said: “I am thrilled that thousands of young people have learnt to play instruments and make friends through Swindon Young Musicians. I am looking forward to welcoming so many of them back for this anniversary weekend”.
Events take place at the Platform, Faringdon Road and at the Wyvern Theatre. Activities at the Platform are free. For more information contact friendsSYM@gmail.com or get in touch via the Facebook group “SYM 50th”
