A new high tech company specialising in computer-generated virtual reality has brought some of the world’s most advanced 3D imaging technology to the town.
Founded by North Swindon resident Tim Hughes,, who was previously 3D mapping and cartography lead at Halcrow and CH2M, CartoConsult offers 3D geospatial mapping and modelling technology to local government, civil engineering, property developers and utilities companies, at a local and national level.
The company has won contracts with Thames Water and is involved in 3D visualisation work in the town to make Swindon one of the UK’s first ‘smart’ cities though work with council-led economic development department Forward Swindon.
Tim believes 3D imaging will revolutionise the way in which towns and cities will be planned and managed in the future. “Large corporate companies and public authorities are often very risk adverse and that is a serious barrier to the adoption of new ideas and technologies,” he said.
“I realised that the only way that I could demonstrate the value of this important new technology was to form a company with complete freedom to try, test and develop the new 3D software and services.”
CartoConsult is now the international distributor for CyberCity 3D, a pioneer in 3D city modelling from Los Angeles. Partnerships and reseller agreements are also in place with high tech company Proteus Geo, based in Bristol, and Dutch company Visit4Real, which develops highly innovative software for creating visualisations of building interiors.
Tim added: “The technology itself is very impressive but putting it to proper use is the main challenge. It is fledgling field which has yet to be widely adopted, but that is just a matter of time and CartoConsult aim to be ahead of the game. Our primary objective over the next year will be to encourage authorities and industry to use the technology and we will offer project management services to ensure that the benefits are realised.”
CartoConsult is based on the Groundwell Industrial Estate, Swindon close to where Tim lives with his wife and three children. He has travelled the world as an expert in mapping technology, having worked on projects in Malta, Kuwait, Dubai and Saudi Arabia.
