Swindon mother of two, Maria Deane, has received such impressive care from the Great Western Hospital that it has inspired daughter Leanne to shave her head in support of the hospital and associated cancer charities.
Maria Deane received a letter like many others in December 2015, inviting her to attend a breast screening scan.
Maria learned that the NHS was offering the scans on a postcode basis and so took advantage of the opportunity.
The NHS previously offered women breast screening at the age of 50. The new incentive has been integral in diagnosing both early and late stage breast cancer in women as young as Maria.
Maria did not feel overly concerned about the results of the scan as she had not felt any lumps or noticed any changes in the breast that were of any concern. It was a shock when she received a letter from the GWH inviting her to an appointment to discuss her results and at the same appointment, a biopsy was taken. The result came back 10 days later and it was revealed that Maria had stage 3 breast cancer.
The day before Maria was due to have surgery, she wrote the following message to her friends on Facebook:
“I feel the need to put this on here just so I can warn all of you lovely ladies over the age of 47 . If you get a letter to go for a mammogram, please go and get it done! It only takes 5 minutes. I went in Dec 2015, couldn’t see or feel a lump and in January 2016 I was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer! So tomorrow I go in for my surgery, onwards and upwards . I have a wonderful family and some real good friends and an amazing hubby who always manages to keep me smiling . Oh and 2 mad dogs.”
Leanne, Maria’s daughter, has been so moved by the support that Maria has received both from the GWH and Breast Cancer Care, that she has pledged to have her head shaved with donations to be shared between Macmillan and Breast Cancer Research. Leanne works at the Homebase Depot and is hoping to generate a lot of support from work colleagues.
Following is the message from Leanne’s JustGiving page:
“Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. So most of you will know that my Mum was diagnosed with stage 3 Breast Cancer in January 2016 and also my Nan has battled with Breast Cancer for 28 years.
“I will be shaving my head on the 24 March to support my mum and to raise money for a deserving charity. The money we raise on this just giving page will be going to Breast Cancer Care and the money that we raise at my work will be split between Macmillan and Breast cancer research.
Thank you for donating.”
