Sarah Grossenbacher is starting a project to study the dialect of people living along the M4 corridor with particular focus on the area between Swindon and Bristol, and she wants your help by sending her a recording of your voice.
Sarah is a linguistics student at the University of Berne in Switzerland is a member of an international team mapping how English is spoken across Britain. She has chosen Swindon, the gateway to the West, to launch her ‘dialect journey.’
She said: “In order to analyse the dialect of the area, I need as many recordings as possible. We’ve created a dialect app, which on the one hand tries to guess the user’s dialect, but on the other hand, users can also record their dialect, which is particularly helpful for us. The users can then explore the dialects on an interactive map.
“The app was already downloaded more than 30,000 times in the UK, but so far we only have 5 recordings from Swindon.
“Please help me spread the word so I can carry out my research.”
