Nursing students from Oxford Brookes University have organised a fun run at Lydiard Park in Swindon with proceeds going to the charity Brighter Futures, at Great Western Hospital.
The five kilometre run, taking place on Saturday 23 April, has been organised as part of the University’s celebrations to mark 125 years of nurse education.
The nursing students taking part are based in Swindon at the Ferndale Campus and study Adult Nursing, Operating Department Practice (OPD) and a range of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses.
Lorraine Whatley, Lecture in Adult Nursing at Swindon said: “The students came up with the idea of a fun run led by students, which both students and staff could get involved in along with anyone in other health disciplines. They wanted to make it a fundraising event and decided to raise money for the local hospital. Many of our students carry out work placements at Great Western Hospital and also go on to secure employment there, so it is a great opportunity to give something back.”
The run has been organised in partnership with Swindon parkrun, a free weekly run organised entirely by volunteers who are running enthusiasts.
The 125 years of nurse education celebrations were launched in January, and are taking place throughout the year in partnership with local health Trusts in both Oxford and at the University’s Swindon Campus. There are a host of events taking place during the year, including a lecture series, social events, exhibitions and fundraising activities.
Ronnie Holmes, third year BSc Adult Nursing student at Swindon said: “I really enjoy being an Oxford Brookes student; my training so far has made a huge difference to my growth as a student nurse. Being involved in celebrating the long history of nursing is very exciting; it is eye-opening to see how much nursing education has changed in the last 125 years and I am enjoying both celebrating the past and being part of the future.
“We are all looking forward to the run, and would encourage everyone to come along on the day and cheer us on!”
The free run will take place at 9.00am starting from outside the Forest Café and Visitor Centre at Lydiard Park. All participants are encouraged to make a donation to Brighter Futures online via the JustGiving page www.justgiving.com/teams/125-Brookes-Run

Brookes nursing students based in Oxford will be doing a charity run on the same day, with proceeds going to Oxfordshire Mind, a local mental health charity.
At the end of 2015 Oxford Brookes announced that it will be moving to new, larger premises in Swindon to significantly enhance its teaching, learning and research. The new Swindon Campus is expected to open during the summer.
