Wiltshire Air Ambulance (WAA) staff and volunteers will be out and about in the community talking to people about volunteering opportunities at the charity.
The roadshows will be taking place in Salisbury, Devizes, Trowbridge, Chippenham, Melksham and Swindon during national Volunteers’ Week beginning on 1 June.
Jemma Brown, WAA’s Volunteer Manager, said: “Every year we use national Volunteers’ Week as an opportunity to thank our volunteers and to recruit new volunteers. Our roadshows will be in public places for people to come and chat to us about volunteering.
“Our volunteers are our ambassadors and they are vital to Wiltshire Air Ambulance in supporting people who fundraise for us and spreading the word about what we do. They attend fundraising events, cheque presentations, give talks and help to sort and distribute our Christmas cards. There is no minimum time commitment and no age limit.
“New volunteers are paired up with an experienced person to shadow them at an event or a talk to gain experience. We would love people to have a chat with us about becoming a volunteer.”
Rob Faulkner, 32, who is the operations manager at the Brunel Shopping Centre in Swindon, joined WAA as a volunteer during national Volunteers’ Week last year. He said: “I will never forget the 6 June 2015 as that was the day I joined this amazing charity. I have become part of the family and you really feel that you are making a difference and helping to save lives.
“In the last 12 months I have attended, on average, an event a month ranging from cheque presentations to attending events in the community to raise awareness and funds. I joined because I was looking for something to do that was completely different from my day job.
“I have met some wonderful people whilst volunteering with the charity; the people who work for the charity, others who volunteer their time to raise awareness and funds, the pilots, the critical care paramedics and patients helped by the service – some who would not be here today without the critical care and fast transport by the helicopter and crew. Many of these I now call friends.”
The WAA volunteer roadshows will be at the following locations from 10am to 1pm;
- Wednesday 1 June – Wilton Shopping Village, Salisbury.
- Thursday 2 June – Times Square cafe, Market Place, Devizes.
- Friday 3 June – The Shires Shopping Centre, Trowbridge.
- Monday 6 June – Emery Gate Shopping Centre, Chippenham.
- Tuesday 7 June – Leekes department store, Melksham.
- Wednesday 8 June – The Brunel Shopping Centre, Swindon.
In addition, on Saturday 4 June at WAA’s Operations Centre, London Road, Devizes, there will be an opportunity for people interested in becoming a volunteer to meet the charity team and existing WAA volunteers, the aircrew and see the helicopter (subject to operational requirements). To attend please contact Jemma by 30 May by email, firstname.lastname@example.org or call 01380 739453.
