International skateboarding championship “Make It Count” hosted the British leg in Swindon on Saturday (7 May) with the chance to win an all expenses paid trip to the finals in Barcelona.
Skaters from all over the country, professionals and amateurs, descended on the ATB Shop on the Hawksworth Trading Estate to show what they could do.
James Threlfall is a professional skateboard rider for event hosts Element, and event organiser for the UK leg. James said: “The 2016 British Make it Count was a huge success, with skaters from all over the country attending. As part of a huge international series, it was amazing to be able to bring the UK leg to Swindon this year. With the winner taking an all expenses paid trip to Europe for the European finals, it was all to play for and Jordan Sharkey massively stepped up the plate!
“With a great atmosphere the day was amazing and Swindon did the UK proud. Huge thanks to ATB for hosting us for 2016 and for looking after all attendees, who from feedback clearly had a great time.”
The competition on the day was fierce, but saw Real Skateboards and Bones Wheels UK rider Jordan Sharkey come out as overall winner, with Joe Hinson of Karma Skateboards coming second and Estonian Tim Prozorov in third.
Diana Kirk, co-owner of ATB Shop, said: “We can’t believe the standard of riding at the Element Make It Count Event. We had pro riders from Plan B skateboards, Karma Boards and also Element competing so the standard was extremely high. Those sort of riders get paid to just skate all day and film so they have dream jobs.
“The Prize of an all expenses paid for trip to Europe will be our biggest ever single prize that ATBShop may ever see and that was the real draw. Riders traveled from all over the UK to get here – Wales, Nottingham, London and we even had two travel over from Estonia.
“Our team Rider Pete Case from Swindon, who normally places in local competitions 1st or 2nd – said the riding standard was high and that he struggled to make it against those riders. He said he gave it his best and was happy with his run on the day but the other riders were just amazingly talented.
“As a co-owner of ATBShop I was enormously proud to have been able to have hosted this event and wonder if we will be able to top that event again.”
