Emily and Catherine Bowdidge, pictured left and right above, are 14-year-old identical twins who both have an interest in media. They might look the same, but they have very different personalities and career path aspirations. Or so we thought…
On their week of work experience from Highworth Warnford School between 27 and 30 June, Emily was placed with Positive Media Group which publishes community magazines Swindon Link and The Ocelot. Her placement was based in print journalism and involved working on stories, editing copy, shadowing interviews and also uploading stories to websites.
Catherine’s work experience was with Swindon 105.5 community radio and entailed writing dialogue and recording it for broadcast.
Every month Positive Media Group editor Jamie Hill, visits 105.5 to talk about the latest issue of Link magazine. On 29 June he was accompanied by Emily to the Liden based station where they bumped into Catherine.
She said: “It’s really good that both of us like the media. We’ve always been interested in viewing online content on phones and tablets, it’s something we talk about quite a lot.”
Both Emily and Catherine believe that work experience is a good opportunity for young people to get involved in media and that it is not just about looking at your phone or posting a photo, or making tea for staff.
Emily, commenting on the challenge of being in a real-world workplace, said: “Me and Cath are two completely different people, yet we both picked the same type of work experience. Cath’s quite shy and in a higher English set than me so most people would think she prefers journalism. But I really enjoyed finding out what it takes to put a magazine together and how you make sense of story for a website. It proved to me that you can do whatever you want; you don’t have to go just because you think you’ll be better at it.
“You don’t really see many teenagers in magazines anymore; stereotypically we just like to sleep and eat and not get involved. It’s nice that we are being put in this story.”
Swindon Link group editor Jamie Hill said: “Emily and Catherine are great examples of what young people can do. They both put their hearts and souls into their media work experience and hopefully they learnt quite a lot from their time with us, which may eventually lead them to a career in the media.”
