The excitement and vibrancy of the Rio Olympics will come to Hazelwood Academy from the 27 June to the 2 July.
Pupils will experience a wide variety of cultural activities throughout the week. In preparation for the closing ceremony, the ‘Rio Carnival’, pupils will be making colourful Rio-themed lanterns and head dresses as well as participating in Samba drumming workshops and dance workshops where they will be learning various dances from around the world.
Pupils will also have the chance to participate in a mini Olympic Games, and have opportunities to learn about the geography of competing countries and the history of the Olympic games.
Sports Leader, Leah Breeze, says “The Olympics in Rio this year will be a very exciting and spectacular event. We are aiming to have a lot of fun and also give our pupils a real taste of the Games whilst promoting British values and learning about other cultures.”
On Friday 2nd July, parents will be invited to attend the Rio Celebration Carnival where they will have the opportunity to join in the celebrations of this international event with dance and drumming performances from pupils as well as a display of the Rio themed art work from the week.
Headteacher, Suzanne Lloyd says “Multi-national events that are widely watched by the general public always give schools the opportunity to engage with their pupils and parents in a fun and educational way. We are really looking forward to our colourful celebration.”
