After receiving two Pride of Swindon awards in April this year, the Swindon Mela organising team have announced that one of the town’s best attended events will again take place in Town Gardens in Old Town on Saturday 13 August, writes Sonny Hamid.
The planning process over the past year has been very challenging with many small and large issues that have had to be faced but we are pleased to say that with much hard work by the team and positive contribution by all of our stakeholders, we have managed to overcome all hurdles that confronted us and we continue to make good progress on all fronts.
Our team has been enlarged by the appointment of a new event manager Duncan Thompson from Production78 who is an extremely experienced professional manager with much know-how gained from managing several other Melas and specialist events in other parts of the UK. He and his team will bring valuable experience and knowledge to the event.
With his assistance and advice we have made rapid progress in preparing a new and more efficient Safety and Security Management Plan all of which has aided us immensely in getting the 2016 Mela off to a promising start.
We continue to respond to enquiries for assistance and stall pitches that have started to come from individuals and organisation interested in participating in the Mela. We would like to hear from people and organisations such as commercial and government organisations, voluntary sector groups and charities, holistic therapists, trade stall holders especially henna artists, jewellery and fashion, beauticians, Asian inspired clothing, arts and crafts and of course food vendors with experience in outdoor events.
Volunteers are needed to assist on the day to assist with a variety of tasks including litter picking duties on Saturday 13 August and also Sunday 14 August. Sponsorship and partnering opportunities are also available. If you or your organisation would like to participate in the Mela then please contact us for more information and application forms at email@example.com
Our plans for the 2016 Mela include more performances by local artists especially the younger generation who should be given the best opportunities to display their talent to a wider audience. We are also planning to include professional head-line acts and they will be announced once negotiations are complete. All of the performances will be staged in the Bowl area as there are no plans to erect a separate stage as in the past. This change of plan will also assist in reducing crowding in the southern part of Town Gardens.
As always, we are continuing our efforts to ensure the event is an environmentally-friendly one and are actively seeking ways of making this year’s Mela even greener. Typically, we are working together with Thamesdown Transport and actively discouraging the use of cars to access the event and will promoting the use of public transport which pass close to the entrance. We are also advertising the use of the Park & Ride facilities at Wroughton which has excellent bus connections to Old Town.
The work is not completed as yet but the project team continue to apply their experience gained from past Melas to ensure that the 2016 Swindon Mela will be as successful as previous Melas.
As the last Swindon Mela took place in 2013, we’re hoping to see you at the 2016 event.
