College leavers expecting to receive their A Level results this week, but without plans for September, are reminded of the apprenticeship opportunities available to them at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon.
With more than 100 apprentices now working at Wiltshire’s largest hospital, an NHS apprenticeship is fast becoming a popular alternative to university or an extra year of college.
A chance to gain new skills, get paid and work towards a professional qualification, apprenticeships are offered in a wide range of different areas from recruitment and finance, to audiology and clinical training.
Once the apprenticeship is completed, students will have an NVQ qualification equivalent to either two A Levels or five GCSE passes, depending on the level of the course.
Jenny Fotheringham, Business Admin Apprentice, started her career at GWH after choosing an apprenticeship over further education. She said: “An apprenticeship has provided me with more than a just qualification and something to write on my CV. It’s made me more confident as a person and I have learnt so much and gained so many new skills that will be valuable to me throughout my working life.”
Apprentices at the Great Western Hospital can take advantage of the same benefits that are available to all NHS staff, as well as 27 days of paid holiday and dedicated study leave.
A free bus pass and £500 bursary on completion are also bonuses of some apprenticeship courses.
