After an impressive 40 years with family-owned construction company Beard in Swindon, local site and project manager Bob Fay has retired.
At the suggestion of a friend, Bob joined the firm as a site manager in Chippenham in 1975 where his first job was managing the construction of a block of flats in the town.
Since then, Bob has been the project manager behind the construction of some major schemes across the South West ranging from much-needed new schools to state-of-the-art sports and leisure centres.
“Beard works on a variety of different projects so the techniques needed can really differ. This means we are always learning which keeps it interesting,” explains Bob. “If you’re not interested in your work then there’s no point. You might as well go home.”
With his construction days now behind him, Bob plans to enjoy his retirement by taking an extended tour of England on his motorbike, driving all over England and into the Scottish Highlands, calling into places he’s always wanted to see like the Eden Project and the Lake District along the way, before working his way back home. If his trip is successful, he plans to go abroad and try the same in another country.
“It’s been a pleasure to work for Beard,” Bob says. “One of the things I like most about the company is that if you’re not sure about something there is always someone willing to help. The family-business aspect trickles down through the company and because of that everyone works together as a team.
“I like that Beard is a straightforward, reliable company which is happy to put right anything it has done wrong. This I think is the reason that Beard wins so many repeat jobs, and is more often than not, sought out by clients instead of seeking out them.
“Another thing I really like about Beard is all the training that the company offers. I would recommend anyone joining the industry to take as much training as you can. It means that you can understand your job better and move forward in your career. Best of all – you get paid for it!”
Marc Bayley, Beard Swindon director said: “We are most grateful to Bob for his 40 years’ service with Beard. He has been a valued member of our Swindon team who has made a significant contribution to the firm’s success over the years.
“Since joining us in 1975, Bob has completed hundreds of construction projects, helping us grow the company through prompt and faultless project delivery. While we shall all miss him, we wish him an excellent road trip and a very happy retirement with many great adventures ahead.”
