Teenagers from the National Citizen Service (NCS) raised £1,044.11 for Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity after a 12-hour dance-a-thon in Swindon on 25 July.
Becca Kerr and her group from NCS West Team 9, from Swindon, smashed their £500 target for the charity, which supports families who have a child with a life threatening or terminal illness.
They danced in The Parade from 9am until 9pm, much to the amusement and delight of shoppers and workers.
The National Citizen Service (NCS) is a government-funded programme bringing together 15 – 17 year olds from a diverse range of backgrounds to make a difference in their community.
Becca said: “We are delighted to have raised so much for Rainbow Trust. I was determined that an event like this would help raise awareness for a national charity, such as Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity, but also fundraise to help them out even further.
“I chose this activity as it was a rather unique event to see in Swindon. It was very entertaining for all parties and ages as the general public also took part in the dancing. I enjoy charity work like this and am enlightened to be helping out for such a cause.”
Emma Haines, Director of Marketing and Fundraising at Rainbow Trust, said: “We are thrilled that NCS West Team 9 have raised such a fantastic amount for Rainbow Trust Children’s Charity at the same time as raising awareness of our work. It’s down to the generosity of our supporters that we are able to continue raising vital funds to support families caring for a seriously ill child.”
Rainbow Trust is a national charity which offers emotional and practical support for the whole family; from their child’s diagnosis, during treatment and, if needed, through bereavement and beyond. It relies almost entirely on voluntary donations and the money raised from events like this help the charity to continue the support it provides families. Just £168 pays for a day’s visit from a Family Support Worker to help with the everyday aspects of life and £1,690 is the cost of support for a family with a terminally ill child for a whole year.
