The Abbey Meads pub in Swindon is holding its fifth open darts tournament on Sunday March 1, 12.30pm with the final planned for 7pm, with top pros competing alongside local amateurs.
The first round will feature 64 players and games will be played on a knock-out basis. All places have been taken up and there is a waiting list.
“Once again we’ve attracted some superb players who will all be vying to win the £500 top prize,” said Karl Willcox, who runs the pub and will be hosting the tournament, along with Steve Razey, captain of one of the darts teams who make the Abbey Meads their home.
Professional players include Dennis Smith (world ranking 35), Mark Cox, Steve Willard and Lee Evans, along with ladies Jan Robbins, a member of the Welsh Ladies international team, and Chris Savvery.
“Last year’s champion, Chris Aubrey, who turned pro not long after winning, will be back to defend his title,” added Karl.
It really is an open tournament, too, with 10 ladies competing alongside the pub, county and professional male players.
“Everyone will be playing for the same prizes,” said Karl.
Darts is a huge sport that’s once again enjoying a resurgence in popularity, with millions tuning in to the dramatic final of the World Championships on BBC2 in January.
“This is the biggest independent darts tournament in Wiltshire,” explained Karl. “We get some big crowds down to watch the matches and it’s a terrific day.”
