Anyone who has ever visited Morocco would describe it as vibrant and colourful, with an incredibly rich culture and history. However, in order to see the truly authentic corners of this beautiful North African country, visiting places off the beaten track is always the way. And, there is no better method to do that than exploring Morocco in a van! Here is everything you need to know before you get going on your Moroccan road trip adventure.

Why explore Morocco in a van?

Travelling across Morocco in a van offers a completely different experience to that of traditional tourism. This mode of travel provides you with a unique sense of freedom to explore the different areas of the country at your own pace. It allows you to be spontaneous with your decisions, so you can pick and choose where you would like to spend more time to really get to know the local culture and community.

Besides the high level of flexibility, travelling in a van is also very convenient. You can take everything you need with you, at all times, so there are no worries on how to fit your stuff in a backpack or a suitcase. Depending on the van you choose, you may also have a toilet, shower and kitchen amenities on board.

How to get there?

If you don’t already have a van and are planning to rent one locally, then the simplest thing to do will be flying to your chosen city in Morocco and going from there. However, if you already own a mobile home, you can also easily get there by the FRS ferry. The ferry leaves from port in Tarifa, Spain and arrives at Tangier, Morocco, which is the most perfect place to start your exotic getaway! The journey is only around 1 hour long and there are multiple ferries every day.

The best places to visit

Here are some of the best things to see in Morocco when travelling in a van.

Tangier

As you begin your journey in Tangier, don’t forget to take in the city’s historical heritage. Stroll the winding streets of the Kasbah, let the aromatic dance of spices from local souks captivate your senses, and watch as modernity and tradition play out seamlessly in the architecture.

Chefchaouen

Next, head south to the picturesque Chefchaouen. Located near the Rif Mountains, this city offers some breathtaking landscapes. Chefchaouen is also known as the “blue city”, as the buildings across are all painted in various shades of blue, which look particularly striking when photographed in the Moroccan sun.

Fez

Venture further to Fez, the country's spiritual capital. Here, you can learn a lot about the country’s ancient customs and rich history, as you visit the local architectural wonders. The city itself offers a lively and bustling atmosphere in the authentic couks, allowing you to fully immerse yourself into the local culture.

Merzouga

Another must-visit place in Morocco is Merzouga - the little village that is a getaway to Sahara Desert. Here, you will really get a sense of tranquillity and spirituality, as you watch the breathtaking sunrise or sunset over the golden deserts of Morocco.

Marrakech

Well-known for the Jardin Majorelle gardens and the famous Jemaa el-Fnaa square, Marrakech offers a uniquely authentic experience. Wander around the Medina, visit the Bahia Palace and have a feast of Moroccan delicacies at the vibrant night market!

Final thoughts

A van adventure in Morocco is the perfect way to not only visit the most famous tourist attractions, but also really get to know the country’s authentic customs and traditions off the beaten track. Besides the places mentioned above, there are dozens of other sites and cities that you can easily explore by car.
