‘Tick tock test’ this clock change weekend

As the clocks change for the summer on Sunday 29 March, Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service is reminding householders of the importance of having working smoke alarms.

The national Fire Kills campaign is using the arrival of British Summer Time to urge householders to ‘tick tock test’ their smoke alarms when they change their clocks over the weekend.

Most people think that a fire will never happen to them, but you’re at least four times more likely to die in a fire in your home if you don’t have a working smoke alarm.

A simple push of the ‘test’ button only takes seconds, so make sure it’s added to your spring to-do list as it could save your life and the lives of family, friends and neighbours.

If you have elderly or vulnerable relatives or neighbours, check that they are able to test their smoke alarms and help if they can’t – over half of the people who die in fires each year are aged over 65.

Home safety manager Neil Chamberlain said: “Smoke alarms are inexpensive and can be bought in DIY stores and at many supermarkets. Statistics have proved that you’re four times more likely to survive a fire if you have a working smoke alarm. As the clocks go forward, it’s an ideal time to ‘press the button’ and make sure both the time and your home safety are right!”

He added: “As well as testing your smoke alarm or changing the battery, you should also purchase another life saving item for the house - a carbon monoxide alarm. Many people are exposed to carbon monoxide fumes without being aware of it, and having such an alarm will alert you to the danger before it’s too late.”

The clock change weekend is the focus of a national safety campaign by Fire Kills, with press, radio and on-line advertising highlighting the deadly effects of inhaling smoke. People can make an online pledge to support the ‘Tick Tock Test’ campaign by visiting www.facebook.com/firekills

Some households will qualify for a free home fire safety check from Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service. To find out more, call 0800 389 7849 or visit www.wiltsfire.gov.uk
