A further 134 patients who tested positive for Covid-19 have died in the UK, according to the NHS.

The number brings the total of UK deaths to 37,048 since the start of the outbreak.

Leading the daily government briefing, Health Secretary Matt Hancock described how, for the first time since March 18, Northern Ireland has not recorded any deaths from coronavirus.

He announced the trial of anti-viral drug Remdesivir in the treatment of coronavirus.

He describes it as "the biggest step forward in the treatment of coronavirus since the crisis began" but stressed the trial is at an early stage.

He was asked numerous questions about the actions of government advisor Dominic Cummings - who is accused of flouting the Government’s social distancing guidelines - and denied that Mr Cummings should step down.

He added: “What he did was within the guidelines, I understand why reasonable people take a different view."

His statement comes as more than 30 Tory MPs have joined calls for Cummings to resign.

Mr Hancock said the government will review fines imposed on families travelling for childcare purposes during lockdown after being put on the spot by a question from Martin in Brighton, a vicar.

In Swindon, there are 448 people who have tested positive for Covid-19 and 522 in Wiltshire. It was earlier reported that one further patient has died of Covid-19 related symptoms taking the total to 112 since the start of the outbreak.

As of 9am on 26 May, there have been 3,681,295 tests, with 109,979 tests on 25 May.

265,227 people have tested positive.

As of 5pm on 25 May, of those tested positive for coronavirus in the UK, 37,048 have died. This new figure includes deaths in all settings, not just in hospitals. The equivalent figure under the old measure would have been 29,965.
