Deaths from Covid-19 rise by 176 as plans for compulsory face coverings on public transport announced

At today’s government coronavirus briefing, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said that the total number of people who have died of Covid-19 has risen by 176, taking the total number of patients who have lost their lives to the disease to 39,904.

He said that coronavirus was still a “very real threat” and that the “fight still goes on to defeat it.”

He announced that from June 15, face coverings will be made mandatory for all people travelling on public transport, with those refusing to comply facing a fine and can be refused travel.

It was earlier reported that one further person had died of Covid-19 at Great Western Hospital - the total now stands at 119 since the start of the outbreak.

In Swindon there are currently 458 people who have tested positive for the virus and in Wiltshire there are 538.

As of 9am on 3 June, there have been 4,786,219 tests, with 171,829 tests on 2 June.

279,856 people have tested positive.

As of 5pm on 2 June, of those tested positive for coronavirus in the UK, across all settings, 39,728 have died.
