62 houses have been proposed by developer Taylor Wimpey for a site close to Croft Road in South Swindon that would connect South Leaze with East Wichel, which has raised concerns from local residents.

Taylor Wimpey are currently consulting with residents who are concerned that the proposal does not take into account significant flooding risks associated with the Ambrose Fields site.

One such resident, Anthea Hilson, has been gathering the support of her neighbours and feels Taylor Wimpey have not properly consulted with people in the local area. Anthea said: “I believe there are very real concerns regarding the increase in water/flooding possibilities and the already overloaded sewerage system plus the problems with traffic in and around Old Town.

“This is a huge number of houses in addition to those in Wichelstowe. If these 62 houses are crammed in on a very boggy field which is a major sponge for Old Town run-off, the problems that could be caused not only in the local area but further afield are concerns for us.”

Labour councillor Nadine Watts took to the group’s Old Town Facebook page to inform residents of her standpoint, saying: “I am keen to work with residents to oppose building on Ambrose Fields. I think we need to look at the Berkeley Farm decision in Wroughton.  We need to distinguish from this case, look for evidence and reasons why Ambrose is not suitable for development.”

This was echoed online by the Conservatives in Old Town, who have started an online petition to halt the proposal before it even reaches planning. The petition states: “We do not support this development and have passed our objections directly to Taylor Wimpey, as part of the consultation, discussed our concerns with a number of residents and contacted the Council Cabinet Member responsible for planning.

“The development not only falls outside of the current Local Plan, but it would put further pressure on local transport links and also impact on the separation of the established residential areas and the newer community in Wichelstowe.

“We feel a more appropriate use of the land should be found, in partnership with the current owners and local residents so it is secured for the whole community.”
