"Would you like to do something different this Christmas?" asks local charity Christmas Care, as they announce dates for prospective volunteers this winter.

Christmas Care has been supporting homeless and vulnerable people in Swindon since 1988. As the charity prepare for the lead up to Christmas they are calling on prospective volunteers to attend their annual gathering for local residents to find out more about how they can contribute this Christmas.

This year the volunteer sessions are being held at St Joseph’s Catholic College, Octotal Way - Tuesday 13 November and Wednesday 21 November at 7.30pm.

An organiser of the event said: "We are looking for adults over 18 to help us provide a caring, hospitable shelter for homeless and vulnerable adults, from 11am 24 December until 10am 28 December.

"You can also help by donating any of the following items:

  • adult clothing and shoes in good condition; new underwear and socks; sleeping bags;
  • toiletries and towels;
  • tinned food - meat, fish, beans, tomatoes, other veg, rice pudding etc;
  • dried food – rice, pasta, breakfast cereals, biscuits, tea, coffee, sugar, drinking
  • chocolate etc
  • perishable and frozen food (closer to Christmas) - bacon, sausages, eggs, cheese, fresh veg;
  • books and board games; and
  • monetary donations are always very welcome - cheques should be made payable to Christmas Care.

"The above can be delivered to Buckhurst Community Centre, Walcot, Swindon SN3 3BS (The Dome) on Saturday 15 December and Saturday 22 December between 10am and 2pm."
