Sergeant Steve McGlynn has been presented with an award by the High Sheriff of Wiltshire, Nicky Alberry in recognition of his great and valuable services to the community.
Sgt McGlynn, part of the Wiltshire Police Crime Prevention Team, has been involved in leading the scheme since the first session in February 2014, and has been committed to expanding and developing the scheme across the county since.
Our cadet scheme is available to young people aged between 13 and 17 years old and gives young people the opportunity to develop qualities and skills through a structured programme and improve the relationship between the police and the public.
Starting in 2014 with a unit in Swindon, the Cadet schemes have grown into three further units including Trowbridge, Chippenham and Salisbury and now engage 105 young people in weekly activities.
Sitting alongside police support volunteers, special constables and watch schemes, volunteer police cadets form part of the Forces Citizens in Policing (CiP) team, giving the public more opportunities to become involved in policing.?
Sgt McGlynn has now passed on the baton to colleagues in the CiP team, so the time to recognise his commitment to the scheme deemed right.
High Sheriff Nicky Alberry said, “One of the lovely opportunities we have as High Sheriff is to be able to present a High Sheriff’s Award to People and Individuals who have made exceptional contributions to their community.
“So, it was a great pleasure to surprise Sgt Steve McGlynn at The Police Cadets Annual Sleep Out event by presenting him with this Award for all his work on youth engagement, and most particularly for his services to Wiltshire Police Cadets.”
Police and Crime Commissioner for Wiltshire and Swindon Angus Macpherson said, “It was great to see Sgt Steve McGlynn being presented with his award for his services to the Police Cadets. Well done and thank you for all your hard work and dedication.”
Sgt McGlynn attended every cadet attestation and awards ceremony since the start. He said, “It was a huge surprise to be presented with the award from the High Sheriff during the annual cadet’s sleep out raising money for homeless charities.
“The scheme is such a great opportunity for young people where they can learn new skills, grow in confidence and gain accreditation along the way.
“I am so proud of each cadet and have seen some go on to work within a policing capacity or continue to support their unit as a leader.
“I will be sad to not be as involved going forward however I know they are all in safe hands and that this opportunity within the CiP portfolio will allow the scheme to grow further.
“The time and commitment from the volunteer cadet leaders is what makes this scheme a success.
“I wish the cadets, cadet leaders and CiP staff all the best for the future and look forward to sharing in the success of its future.”
