West Swindon was on the brink of losing its only dedicated arts and performance facility in July 1998 when a report to Swindon Council proposed its closure to make way for a gym.
The arts suite was included in the original design and construction of the building when it opened in 1985. It had a 150 seat capacity with lighting, sound and projection equipment, as well as a craft studio and a photographic darkroom.
Two members of staff organised a programme of rock, jazz and classical concerts, comedy, dance and theatre performances, as well as arts and craft workshops for all ages. But they were made redundant in the budget cutbacks of 1995.
Despite protests from local bands, arts groups and schools, closure was approved and work on the gym started in May 1999.
