A widespread power cut hit businesses operating from Shaw Ridge Leisure Park, The Link Centre, and hundreds of homes today.

Cineworld suspended all screenings and The De Vere Hotel was forced to turn customers away from its gym and swimming pool facilities. And bar and kitchen facilities were also affected.

The power outage also affected The Shaw Ridge branch of Pizza Hut which was closed for at least two hours, with the kitchen being left without power over the busy lunchtime period.

A spokesman for Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks said: “We’d like to apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused by today’s fault in Swindon and thank them for their patience as our engineers worked to safely restore power as quickly as possible.”

SSEN was alerted to the power cut at 13.16pm today following a fault on the high voltage network. A total of 1979 customers were affected in total, however all have now been restored.

Customers were restored in stages via network switching – all customers were back on by 15.10pm today.
