Gales and heavy rains will hit Swindon as Storm Erik hits the mainland, reaching a peak overnight.

The Met Office say that gales could reach 50 mph in Wiltshire, with even stronger winds expected in the north of England and on the west coast caused by a deep area of low pressure tracking northeast into Saturday.

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Will Lang, said: “Southwesterly winds will strengthen across the UK on Friday, so it’s going to be a windy day for everyone. In addition to the strong winds, bands of heavy rain will sweep eastwards on Friday.”

Police are advising motorists to plan their routes ahead of time, leave plenty of time for their journey and drive according to the conditions - being aware of fallen trees or other debris in the road.
