A man was arrested in Swindon last week on suspicion of a number of driving offences following a short foot chase.

Officers initially spotted a vehicle being driven at excess speed on Kingswood Avenue at approximately 10.40pm on April 12.

The vehicle continued at speed before the driver decamped - an officer chased the driver on foot before catching up with him in Dulverton Avenue.

The driver – a man in his 20s - who is currently on license for dangerous driving, drug driving and driving without insurance, was arrested on suspicion of the following offences:

- Driving whilst disqualified
- Careless driving
- Driving whilst unfit through drugs (cannabis)
- Driving without insurance

He was taken to custody at Gablecross and has since been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Sgt James Neighbour said: “This was excellent work by the officer involved who was suspicious of the vehicle when it was seen being driving at excess speed – when the driver decamped, the officer gave chase and caught up with the suspect.

“I cannot stress enough the dangers of driving whilst under the influence of drugs. You are not only putting your own life at risk, but the lives of other road users and pedestrians. I’d urge anyone considering getting behind the wheel of a vehicle having taken illegal drugs to seriously rethink their actions.

“If you suspect someone of driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, to please call 999 and give as much information as possible including a description of the vehicle and driver, and direction of travel.”
