Age UK Wiltshire has taken on the management of the Toothill Community Centre, having recently signed a 5-year lease with Swindon Borough Council.
In a statement charity CEO Julian Kirby said: "It is our aim to breathe new life into the centre, creating an asset for the local community, offering facilities to hire to a range of clubs, groups, and individuals. Over the coming months we plan to work with local organisations to introduce and develop activities that help alleviate loneliness and social isolation amongst the older population locally.
"We have spent that past two months preparing the centre with fantastic practical support from corporate volunteers from Nationwide Building Society and JayWing with decorating the centre to make it feel fresh, bright, and inviting.
Robert Buckland QC MP said: “Over the past two years, I have been working with Swindon Seniors Forum on a local campaign to tackle loneliness. As part of this campaign, I have been working to bring together key organisations in and around Swindon to tackle this issue.
"I am delighted that Age UK Wiltshire have become involved in this campaign and taken on the management of Toothill Community Centre with the aim of working with other local organisations to introduce activities that help alleviate loneliness amongst the older population here in Swindon.
"I will continue to work hard with Swindon Seniors Forum to bring together local organisations to discuss the excellent work that is already taking place here in Swindon, as well as discussing what further can be done to tackle loneliness and social isolation."
