Swindon’s slimmers have raised over £4,600 for Cancer Research UK after they got behind a month-long activity campaign celebrating Slimming World’s 50th anniversary.
This month Swindon's Slimming World groups came together to raise money for charity and celebrate weight loss achievements by participating in the Golden Body Magic Challenge.
The challenge invited slimmers across the UK and Ireland to cover 50 miles over the month of August. The Slimming groups in Swindon joined forces on Saturday 7th September to celebrate their achievements and take part in an ‘old fashioned School Sports Day’. Activities included hula hooping, welly throwing, sack races and of course, egg and spoon races.
The Golden Body Magic Challenge, which is part of Slimming World’s Golden Summer of Celebration, aims to raise awareness of the links between keeping a healthy weight and reducing the risk of developing some types of cancer.
Member Lee Peachey, from the Greenbridge Tuesday night group has lost five stone since joining the group. He has run 110 miles over the month despite not feeling able to take part in any activity before losing weight.
Lee said: “Before I lost weight anything remotely active was my idea of a nightmare. I drove everywhere I could and I made excuses if anyone planned anything I might end up getting out of breath for – even climbing stairs and playing with the kids felt like a struggle and if I could avoid it, I would have done.
“As the weight dropped off my confidence grew and grew. From the very first night at Slimming World I was welcomed so warmly and instantly made to feel part of the group. We are all there for the same reason – to lose weight and to help and support each other to do the same"
Event organiser and weight-loss consultant Lisa Watson says she is so proud of Lee and the Swindon Slimming World groups for their efforts: “We had gorgeous weather conditions for our event and in true Slimming World-style our members, their friends and families were out in force to support each other. They showed just what can be done when we come together – both in terms of achieving something amazing and raising money for a great cause too.”
