Swindon's Festival of Christmas will officially kick-off at the weekend with special guest, and JLS star, Aston Merrygold.

Last month inSwindon BID Company Ltd launched the Festival of Christmas in Swindon town centre with the announcement of JLS star, Aston Merrygold, as the headline act for the official Lights Switch-On event on Saturday 16th November.

Alongside Aston, stars of the Wyvern Theatre’s Sleeping Beauty panto, Michelle Collins and CBeebies Chris Jarvis, plus local acts, where inSwindon BID provides a platform for the Swindon community to showcase its talent.

There wouldn’t be a Light Switch On event without the lights to physically switch on and this week will see more than 2,000 twinkly bulbs start to appear as the festive installation of the lights start to go up throughout Swindon town centre.

The Christmas lights include lamppost sprays up and down Regent Street, The Parade, Bridge Street, Canal Walk, Fleet Street, Fleming Way and Havelock Street; a canopy of fairy lights at Theatre Square; and Icicles along Faringdon Road and Morley Street.  The main feature lights include a giant star on the Brunel West car park, the 3D star on the planter in the Wharf Green area and two giant LED Christmas Trees on Debenhams’ canopy.

Di Powell, inSwindon BID CEO said: “Christmas is always such an exciting time for us at the BID and we love to add magic to the festivities. We’ve always received high praise for the quality of our Christmas lights as they really brighten up the town centre on these dark winter nights and gets everyone in the mood for the Christmas festivities.

“Christmas is also an important time for our town centre businesses and as a community we should be supporting our high street by shopping local. We can’t wait to see everyone join us for a spectacular event on Saturday 16th November to kick-start the festivities with us and for us all to #ShopLocalSwindon.”

The Festival of Christmas celebrates everything ‘Christmas’ taking place in Swindon town centre from 16 November - 31 December.
