Swindon Museum and Art Gallery has successfully acquired its first work through the Arts Council England’s Acceptance in Lieu scheme.

The scheme enables taxpayers to transfer important works of art and heritage objects into public ownership and applies to work that has important cultural and historical connections.

The Bath Road gallery’s new acquisition, a painting called ‘Latin Quarter 1922’ by Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson, will be on display from Tuesday, 10 December as part of a new exhibition entitled ‘Hit Repeat: Prints from the Swindon Collection of Modern British Art’.

Sophie Cummings, Curator of the Swindon Museum and Art Gallery, said: “We are delighted to have been awarded our first Acceptance in Lieu from the Arts Council England.

"The Swindon Collection is lucky enough already to have a Nevinson in the collection, but this important print, ‘Latin Quarter’, shows another side of this significant artist, and we are absolutely thrilled with it.”

Nevinson (13 August 1889 – 7 October 1946) was an English figure and landscape painter, etcher and lithographer and one of the most famous artists of the First World War. During the war, he served as a volunteer ambulance driver before ill health forced his return to Britain. He volunteered for home service with the Royal Army Medical Corps and used these experiences as subject matter for future work.
